Possibly the foremost eccentric of the seventeen penguin species, the yellow-eyed penguin is thought as "hoiho" in Maori, the home language of New Zealand, to that it's endemic. A small breeding range and home ground deterioration have led to a decline within the population of the yellow-eyed penguin, that is classified as vulnerable on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of Vulnerable Species.
